One of my greatest passions as the Worship Pastor at Freedom Church is
songwriting. Singing original songs is part of the culture at
Freedom. God speaks His vision to Pastor JR for our church and our
city. It’s my job to create worship experiences that make that vision
come to life. Part of doing that is writing songs that speak the vision.

It’s easy to fill a set list with songs by Hillsong. They write
amazing songs that were birthed out of the vision of Hillsong Church
and for the people in Australia. We write songs that are birthed out
of the vision of Freedom Church and for the people in Acworth. Any
worship leader who can play chords and carry a tune can learn worship
songs written by other artists. To write songs for the vision of your
church means you take the vision God has spoken to your pastor and you
prayerfully get before God and allow Him to bring it to life through
song.

One way we make this happen on a consistent basis is by having weekly
song writing sessions. Tyler Orr (Worship Leader) and I sit
down and develop songs based on upcoming series ideas that God has
given our Pastor. As time goes on more originals will take over the set list. We are very
excited about going into the studio in September to do a full-length
album of all original songs. This album and all of the songs would not
exist apart from the vision of Freedom. Our songs are written so that
people far from God can experience life in Christ.

We always play songs that people thought they would never hear in church. I think we took that to a whole new level this sunday. The energy was insane and God was lifted high. I was really digging this set.

We kicked off the highly anticipated Rebel series on Sunday. I believe it was everything it was hyped up to be. The set design was awesome with a couple Harley’s on stage and a barbed wire fence. I’ll post some pics next week. We kicked the series off with some “Born To Be Wild.” We aren’t letting up throughout this series. Many more surprises still to come.

This year I got to celebrate Father’s Day with everyone else. It was amazing because:

1. I am a new Father to the cutest little boy in the world. God has rocked my world since bringing Gavin into my life. 
2. I have the most incredible Father in the world and was able to celebrate with him. My Father sets the bar for all the other dads. I attribute everything I’ve accomplished in life to the fact that he has always believed in me and has done whatever it takes to help see me succeed.
3. I got to celebrate Father’s Day at Freedom Church, the greatest place on the planet. We do Father’s Day in Freedom style. 
4. After church I took a 3 hour nap and chilled with my family. There’s nothing greater!

To say that Sunday was amazing would be an understatement. Close to 40 people were baptized, publicly displaying their love for Jesus Christ! We cheered and worshipped very loud as we celebrated the life change in our city. Most of the people who were baptized thought they were just going to church that morning. Then the holy spirit changed their life and they got out of their seats and obeyed God through baptism. It will never get old.

Last week was so crazy I never got around to posting last sundays set. Here’s week one of awakening:

Worship Set 5.31.09:

*Had an incredible creative elements with “My Chains Are Gone.” We sang that song after Pastor JR’s message about the valley of dry bones and how God breathed life into the dead and formed tendons on the dry bones. Each member of the band came out separately as a different singer was singing a verse of Amazing Grace. The band members brought out chains and dropped them on the stage. The pile continued to get bigger as we added an extra instrument and new vocalist each verse. It continued to build until we reached the chorus and celebrated God breaking our chains. At the peak of the song we had 10 freedom partners coming out one after another dropping chains on the pile. It was powerful.

Here is a picture of the 12 foot “It” we used during our Full Of It series. We are finished with that series and want to give it to any church that could use it for their set design. The best part is that it’s free. Email me at blake@freedomlive.net.
